I want to get rid of my glasses
Melanie, 24 years old, student, Bordeaux, France
I’ve been wearing glasses since the age of 15, but they are annoying during exercise and I can’t stand contact lenses.
Refractive surgery refers to procedures designed to correct refractive errors or vision problems : myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. These procedures can eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.
WHO IS IT FOR ?
Men and women can benefit from eye surgery if they qualify :
- Myopia between -1 and -10 diopters
- Astigmatism between -6 and +5 diopters
- Hyperopia between +1 and +6 diopters
The surgeon uses a femtosecond laser to cut a thin corneal flap. The flap is lifted up in order to access the deeper layers of the cornea. The excimer laser is then used (tissue removal) to change the curvature of the cornea. Once the shape anomaly is (that causes the refractive error) corrected, the surgeon puts the corneal flap back in place.
The procedure is one hour long and patients can leave the clinic right after.
Anesthetic eyedrops prevent pain and discomfort during the procedure.
Read the information sheet about laser eye surgery.
The duration of the recovery is linked to the severity of the eye defect. Patients with mild myopia can regain a clear vision as soon as the night following the procedure. Patients with more severe vision problems will have to wait one day to regain a clear vision which will improve over the following few days of recovery. Patients can’t rub their eyes during the initial stages of the recovery since it’s the only risk factor for postoperative complications and poor results.

For an eye surgery, the duration of stay is 3 nights / 4 days.
